Writing market - American psychos anthology

AMERICAN PSYCHOS: A SERIAL KILLER ANTHOLOGY

Red Room Press is seeking stories for a new dark crime/thriller/horror anthology, American Psychos: A Serial Killer Anthology. Inspired by the most disturbingly violent and graphic crime thriller novels of our time, including Bret Easton Ellis’s American Psycho, Shane Steven’s By Reason of Insanity, Michael Slade’s Headhunter, their goal is to make American Psychos a brutal, suspenseful, nightmare-inducing hard ride into hell.

Stories must be about a serial killer, obviously. The story can either be based on a real serial killer or a fictional serial killer. Stories should primarily be set in the USA, but the character may travel abroad. They want stories that are brutal, graphic, disturbing and violent. The above referenced books will give you a good idea of what they’re looking for. Serial killers must be human; no supernatural elements, monsters, or vampires. They can have supernatural beliefs, however, and they can be any gender or race.

Editors: Randy Chandler and Cheryl Mullenax.
Deadline: October 1, 2018.
Publication Date: Early 2019
Length: 3500-5500 words.
Response Time: 4-8 weeks
Payment for original stories: $100

Go to the website for details on what to send. There are also several comments from potential contributors: http://www.redroompress.com/submission-guidelines/american-psychos/

Good luck!

Writing market - Mystery Weekly Magazine

Here’s a paying market for writers of mysteries: Mystery Weekly Magazine.

The magazine is a labour of love for the husband and wife team of Publisher Charles F. Carter and Editor Kerry. The magazine website is http://www.mysteryweekly.com/ You can download a copy to your Kindle or get the paperback version from Amazon. You can submit stories via email.

In March Mystery Weekly Magazine was spotlighted in the American periodical, The Writer

Here’s an excerpt of that article, which just happens to mention my story due to appear later this year:

‘The Carters read submissions all year long, making detailed notes for writers who request feedback. They promote their authors widely, publishing excerpts and links to Mystery Weekly’s stories via email, the journal’s website, and social media.

‘One such author is writer and illustrator Nik Morton, whose story “The Very First Detective: The Killing Stone” will be published in the magazine’s Sherlock Holmes special issue, October 2018.

‘“It’s a prehistoric Holmes and Watson pastiche featuring Olmes and Otsun (Otsun is Olmes’s sidekick as well as being the clan’s medicine man),” Kerry explains. “Aside from being well-written, it has a unique setting, which makes it especially entertaining. We don’t get many submissions that cross genres, so any mysteries with fantasy, western, or speculative treatments definitely earn extra points.”’

Go for it!

Writing - anthology market - Noir science fiction short story

Coffin Hop Press are looking for stories in the 4,000-8,000 word range in the very specific niche of SCIENCE FICTION NOIR (Tech-Noir, whatever you want to call it) for an anthology to debut in August 2016.

As with previous anthologies, please send an inquiry with a story proposal before sending a finished story. They will not accept unsolicited submissions.

coffinhop@gmail.com – subject line: SCI-FI NOIR/

Payment terms and details will be discussed once a proposal has been reviewed.

Proposal deadline: March 31, 2016

Final manuscript deadline: May 30, 2016

This is a very specific call for specially tailored stories. As they say, 'Just because your protagonist is a detective, or someone wears a fedora in the year 2095, or a female character is described as having gams is not enough to qualify a story as Noir. Please ensure that your idea, and subsequent story, adhere to the spirit of the genre: Dark, nihilist, psychologically complicated. Characters should be possessed of questionable morals. Institutions should be corrupt and malevolent. Sexual dalliances should always end in convoluted doom... We’re looking for Jim Thompson in Space, not Buck Rogers with spats.

Go to the website - https://coffinhop.com/2016/02/02/sci-fi-noir-new-anthology-call/

and you need to read the item 'Writing from the shadows - an exploration of noir' before proposing your story.

Writing – Market – Fantastic Stories of the Imagination

If you write science fiction or fantasy, then try this magazine. You can even download a copy from last year to read. It has now been classified as a professional market by the SFWA.

http://www.fantasticstoriesoftheimagination.com/fantastic-stories/

What they want: Original stories up to 3000 words in length, and reprints of any length. Read the latest issues of Fantastic Stories for prime examples of their stories.

That’s stories that cover the entire science fiction and fantasy spectrum: everything from magic realism to hard SF.

As they say, ‘We want a story to surprise us and to take us to unexpected places. We love word play, and would like to see stories with a literary bent, though decidedly not a pretentious bent. We could spend some time telling you what we don’t want, but we’ve found that good stories can make us buy them regardless of how many of our rules they violate.

‘We welcome stories from underrepresented communities and cultures, and are always looking for submissions with diverse characters; it’s a big world, with room for everyone to have their story told. Let your imagination run wild, push the limits of genre, or send us something traditional. We want it to see it all.

Format: Submissions should be sent as RTF attachments in standard manuscript form. PLEASE DO NOT underline italics. Mark stories original or reprint in the subject line of your e-mail. No simultaneous submissions.

Payment: 15 cents per word on acceptance for original stories, and 1 cent per word (up to $100, and a minimum of $25) for reprints.

Rights: Original stories will be licensed for the web as well as a print version of the magazine, an e-version of the magazine, and two annual anthologies. One anthology will collect all the original stories from the year and be available in both print and electronic editions. The other will collect all of the fiction from the webzine and be released only as an electronic book. Reprints will be licensed for a print version of the magazine, an e-version of the magazine, and one annual anthology. Rights for original fiction are exclusive for 120 days after publication (and then non-exclusive), reprint rights are always non-exclusive.

Response time: Usually within two weeks, if not sooner.

Email submissions to:

Writing – Market – Granta

Granta is a leading literary journal that’s been around for many years (founded in 1889, it was rejuvenated in 1979 and yet again in 2007). Many well-known, famous and even popular writers have appeared within its covers; usually, its contributors are invited; however, each year it has an open submissions window and this year's closes on April 1, no fooling.

Submit in only one category at a time: fiction, non-fiction, and art will be considered for both their print and online editions, unless you specifically state otherwise in your cover letter. Actually, they remain open to submissions of photography and art year-round.

Granta only publishes original material, i.e. first-ever publication. There is no set maximum length or minimum length, though most of their submissions fall between 3,000-6,000 words.

Include a cover letter stating where your work has been published before, if relevant.

Do not submit book manuscripts, academic essays or reviews. Only submit work written in English.

Get more details and submit through their website http://granta.com/

You can read some of the fiction on their website, to get a feel for the style and content. Send only your best work.

Good luck!
